WHAT YOU SAY COUNTS MEDIA AWARENESS TRAINING
Presenter: Joan Lowery, M.Ed., Lowery Communications, Sarasota, FL

A news story can make or break an organization's image and ultimate success. Understanding and preparing how to interact with the press should be part of every organization's business strategy. For better or worse, the media is a powerful vehicle for elevating your organization, product or service to the top of the public's "radar screen." News gathering professionals are always striving to be first with their stories. Some of the best scoops come from being "out and about" at events, trade shows and informal meetings and listening in as your employees talk about your organization. The "unidentified spokesperson" who provides news to a journalist could be an unwitting receptionist, sales person or trade show representative. This seminar discusses the importance of training all employees to recognize how What They Say Counts. This session will address: 1) the role of the press in shaping an organization's image; 2) how employees can impact the company's image for better or worse; 3) the key factors in communicating with the press; 4) skills for communicating with the press effectively.

As professionals in the field of event and festival planning, we all face day to day trials and tribulations. Most of the time we deal quickly with the situation, but sometimes unexpected circumstances beyond our control occur and test even the most optimistic person. Come for an hour or stay for the night to Friday's FFEA Finale. It doesn’t get any better in paradise then sitting outside under palm trees watching a beautiful sunset while listening to the island sounds of Howard Livingston and starting off dinner with a cold one and conch chowder. You’ll watch the pro from Team Sandtastic create a sand sculpture and then it's your turn to get a team together and compete in the "Best Sand Sculpture Contest". Mixed in-between all this, will be opportunities to compete in a beach bag relay, try your arm at coconut bowling, and race with a shark on your head - all for great prizes. And, if it’s too hot for you, Coconut Dave will be there to weave you a hat!

Then, as the evening darkens, look to the skies for a perfect ending to the convention and trade show… a colorful fireworks display high in the sky above the palms by Pyrotecnico.

(Dinner/soda included in registration fee. Cash bar.)

Coconut DaveCoconut Dave
Raised in the Virgin Islands, Dave made his living on fishing boats. During these years, he learned from the natives how to weave incredible baskets, hats, and animals from a single palm frond. Dave was the original coconut hat weaver in Mallory Square, Key West starting in the '50s. Jimmy Buffet even used one of Dave's hats to collect money when he was a street performer. Dave was also featured in a beer commercial in the '80s for his palm tree climbing abilities. Dave prides himself on being able to weave [almost] anything.

Saturday, August 8th

Those staying over Friday Night have the opportunity to join the "Poolside Pals" or the "Beach Bums". The Poolside Pals will gather round the pool for a day of sun and fun. The Beach Bums will take a 15 minute ferry ride to the Hyatt's private beach. Along the way you may see dolphins and bald eagles. You can bring your own sandwiches (from the coffee shop). Water and soda will be provided. It is a great shelling island. There are umbrellas and lounge chairs. The ferries come and go continually all day...so you can go and come as you like.
